What Is Belviq?
Belviq, also known as lorcaserin, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2012 as an alternative to help weight loss. The drug works by activating brain receptors for serotonin, a neurotransmitters that triggers feelings of satisfaction. As a result, the drug controls appetite. The drug was approved as medication for those who are obese with a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher, or who are overweight with a BMI or 27 or higher.
Cancer Study & Recall
Belviq’s manufacturer, Japanese drug company Eisai, was required to conduct long-term safety studies after the drug’s approval. The results of the 5-year study that examined 12,000 patients showed an elevated overall cancer rate for the group who took Belviq compared to the placebo group. Specifically, reports of pancreatic, colorectal, and lung cancer were elevated in Belviq users.
Eisai has agreed to withdraw Belviq and Belviq XR, its long-acting form, from U.S. markets, and the FDA has recommended that patients stop taking the drug and seek advice from their health care provider, and potentially a lawyer.
